The pod attaches to the device magnetically, and not through a 510 connector like on a vape mod. Pod mods usually have adjustable airflow.

They’re available in pre-filled or refillable designs. Some will have power buttons, but often, they’re automatic—meaning you just take a drag on them to produce vapor.

Nowadays, a lot of pod vapes will come with airflow control that allows you to tailor the draw to suit your preference. Pod coils can be made of various materials. The most usual is Kanthal, but some coils may be made of stainless steel or nichrome. Some pods take mesh-style coils, which are known for faster heat-up times.

These “open systems” give you much more freedom, but they also require a little more work as you have to buy your own ejuice and fill the pod up yourself.

All of the benefits of using pod vapes can also be downsides. Because they are less powerful, they don’t produce flavor that is as great as a high-powered mod and tank setup.
